Eugène Atget’s photographs of Paris between 1898 and 1927 form the bedrock of a modernist photographic vision in America. Yet he was undervalued by early promoters of photography as art. Most of what we now know of Atget has come through Berenice Abbott, who purchased Atget's estate in 1927 and devoted much of her creative life to popularizing his work. Representing her vision of Atget’s tapestry of Parisian life, this book reproduces 100 photographs in duotone plates (some never before published), discusses the prints created by Abbott from Atget negatives, and includes an essay from Abbott speaking to Atget's methods and vision. "The Atget prints are ... a rare and subtle perception, and represent perhaps the earliest expression of true photographic art." --Ansel Adams. 163 pages. Size: 9-1/2" wide X 10-3/4" tall.

This study discusses how George's foreign policy caused a split in the Whig party between George's supporters, such as Stanhope, and the anti-Hanoverians, such as Townshend and the Walpoles, and the study ends by indicating that it was this very split which was subsequently to enable Robert Walpole to rise to supreme political power. xv, 366 pages with source notes and index.

Christina , 1626-89, Queen of Sweden (1632-54), daughter and successor of King Gustavus Adolphus II. Her early devotion to state affairs soon gave place to other interests, especially a zeal for learning. She attracted many foreign artists and scholars- including Descartes- to her court. Her distaste for marriage caused her to designate her cousin Charles (later Charles X) as her successor. Tiring of her duties and the growing antagonism of the nobles, and attracted to Catholicism, Christina abdicated in 1654. She left Sweden attired as a man, was received into the Catholic Church, and settled at Rome. Her eccentricity and financial incompetence kept her affairs in continual disorder. On the death (1660) of Charles X, Christina returned to Sweden, hoping to regain her throne but failed. She again went to Sweden in 1667 but was refused entrance into Stockholm because of her religion. 405 pages with bibliography and index.

In 1678, against a backdrop of paranoiac fear of Catholicism, Titus Oates and his followers succeeded in convincing both Parliament and the public of a Jesuit and Catholic conspiracy to assassinate Charles II and overthrow the Protestant establishment. Nashville, Tenn.: Brandon Printing Company, 1887. First Edition. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Hard Cover. Ex-Library. Good / No Jacket, as Issued.

"Twenty years after this diary was written it was revised and supplemented with information gained from the writer’s comrades and from official documents. It is therefore somewhat impersonal but no less reliable. Its chief value as a travel book lies in the author’s clearly indicated routes, with incidental observations on the country and occasional references to people visited. Hancock’s wartime travels were confined entirely to northern Alabama and Mississippi, Tennessee, and southeastern Kentucky. Much of the time he was following General Forrest and, notably, he was present at the so-called Fort Pillow massacre. In October 1864, he was wounded and thereafter took no part in the war." --E. Merton Coulter, TRAVELS IN THE CONFEDERATE STATES, #210.

"List of illustrations calls for 20 plates, some have 20, some have 12, some have none, etc. Evidently the publisher ran short on illustration pages but kept on binding." --Tom Broadfoot, CIVIL WAR BOOKS, Fifth Edition.
